Spain’s left-wing federal government officially revealed the acknowledgment of a Palestinian state on Tuesday, after the choice was made recently together with Norway and Ireland.
“This is a historical choice that has a single objective: To assist the Israelis and the Palestinians attain peace,” Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated in a declaration outside his main home, Moncloa Palace, in Madrid.
Sánchez spoke before the federal government’s Council of Ministers offered its main approval. Their indication off was anticipated later on Tuesday.
In view of the argument on the concern of the borders of a state of Palestine, Sánchez stated that it was not for Spain to “specify the borders of other nations.”
The Socialist leader stated the state of Palestine “need to primarily be practical.”
To that end, he stated: “The West Bank and the Gaza Strip need to be linked by a passage, with East Jerusalem as its capital and joined under the genuine federal government of the Palestinian Authority.”
Sánchez stated that his federal government’s choice was not directed versus Israel, which he called “a friendly country that we appreciate, that we worth and with which we wish to have the very best possible relations.”
He stated his federal government is opposed to the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas and highly condemns the attacks the militants introduced on Israel on October 7.
Nevertheless, acknowledgment is “the only method to a two-state service.”
